Why is coffee called "joe"?

And to add to the chaos I've read that 'a cup of Joe' didn't enter our lexicon until after (or during) WWII where GI Joe was supplied with, if memory serves, a 1 lb. ration of coffee per week. In time 'give me a cup of coffe' morphed into 'cuppa Joe please'.
