what makes a coffee shop agreeable?

I agree with you, on the military cafe point, it creates an environment that can be sterile and uncomfortable. I also find that the wrong color scheme can do the same. The local coffee shop in my town has an abrasive color scheme of mismatched oranges, yellows and wood. I always find the most comfortable shops to be like a firelight living room: slightly darker, with deep, rich colors and comfortable seating.
