This is a great article all about search engine optimization plus it explains the importance of backlinks and why directly exchanging links can be negative and some times even be harmful to your website its the page rank 4 backlinks that count, out of links backlinks (links pointing to your site) recripicol links (links pointing to your site with direct links from your site) and external links (links pointing out of your site) recripicrol links have little or no value the easiest way to do this is create a blog and exchange their links by in turn writing an article about their website, that way search engines will not penalize you for creating what's called paid linking...
also remember to link to only similiar sites as well as page rank 4 sites or more, unless it is a blog or forum...
