need to buy a roaster

Hi there, newbie to the forum and love it so far :coffee1: anyway, i'm sure i'll be around for a while. My wife and I are starting a small coffee biz together and we need a roaster. After many hours of research I think we want either the Ambex or Deidrich, something in the 2kilo/batch range, hopefully used too.

if ya know of anything, or can recommend something just as good, please let me know

thanks

Hi Kale,

One of the interesting aspects of commercial roasters is how little the price difference is to go from a 2 kg to a 5 kg to a 10 kg etc. It's just a thought because when you work out the costs of venting, permits and afterburners which might need to be replaced to upgrade and then factor in the pounds you can produce roasting, say 2 days a week, it doesn't take too long to outgrow a 2 kg machine.

2 kg = 4.4lbs
80% capacity
= 3.52 lbs green/batch
15% shrinkage
= 3 lbs roasted/batch
2, 8 hr days
= 48 lbs roasted/wk

Just more numbers and thoughts to toss into the mix!

Thanks for the input... I can see your point well. The other thing is, we need to be able to keep the roaster on a cart of some kind, as our little shop will be mobile, and roasting will be done outside too.

Basically a mobile coffee stand on a trailer, with the ability to wheel out the roaster when needed.

simple right

ALUN!!! Glad to see you are still breathing!! I used to have the 120 kilo roaster. I am no longer with that company. I now have a 60 kilo Ambex that I roasted on for 8 years with previous company. It was rebuilt by roasters authority and looks INSANE!!!

ox pm me on what kind of price you are looking for. I might have something for you.

I just got a new Ambex YM-2 roaster on the 17th of Nov...

I bought it from a gentleman named Amer who is the manufacturer. I went down to Clearwater, FL and checked out the machine itself. He mentioned that only sell machines he has on hand and ready to ship. I paid him on Friday, Nov 18 and got the roaster on Wednesday the 23rd. He was really pleasant to deal with and provides excellent customer service. You should give him a call, his business number is 727-440-0023.

Yup, still keeping going (I mean alive and kicking). Been flatout busy for the last year, and currently holed up in Kuala Lumpur- not a bad city if u are thinking of a place to visit in my part of the world. Pretty happy with the way things are going- I have plans for my first 120 by may next year. They were putting the finishing touches on one in Izmir when I was there in August- nice beasty. The guys there actually told me u were no longer at the same company, I think they are your number 1 fan with all the Topers u had going at one time. Guess u are pretty busy leding up to Christmas and the new opening. Keep well

Thanks man! Yes I am no longer with that company. They moved across the Country but luckily they scored one of my favorite employees. I am roasting for bagel chain that is in the process of EXPLODING! When I started we had 7 stores. We now have 10 and 20 in construction. 300 signed off on...like I said explode!! We have a 800 sq ft roastery with a 200 sq ft coffee shop. The coffee shop was just for fun..until people started approaching us to buy coffee shop franchises. We opened the doors 2 days ago and the first franchise was sold a month ago. Congrats on the growth of your biz! No offense to people using 120 kilos but I will never go taht big again. I feel I have more control on a sixty and that the product produced is hands down superior. My boss came to me yesterday with plans on something big. He said we are going to need a bigger roaster. He told me his plans and figured we would need at least a 4 bagger. I told him how I felt about "commercial" sized roaster compared to "micro" roasters. He said fine...buy four 60 kilos. I know it will be more work but I am willing to put the work in to produce a better quality coffee.

I got mine from Craigslist, I feel so old school. But hey it works and it was only $10 bucks. It lets you put those little cups into it to make specialty coffee!
