Coffee Sludge.... Good or Bad?

I like coffee and coffee is not bad for health i take 5 or 6 cups of coffee in a day.When I pour
from my press I always slosh the coffee around to try and pick up more sludge.

I find that coffee sludge is only good from a dark roast though. It does give a nice full bodied finish to the coffee. With a mild/medium roast the sludge is too tangy and acidic to be any good. I'll try the ice cream out. Do you think coconut milk would make ice cream the same as cream/milk would? The fat content of coconut milk is about twice what whole milk is... so kind of like a light cream

What about the sludge from instant coffee? Do you think that is still as good? Oh, and you don't think there can be sludge?

Have someone make instant coffee in a coffee maker!

So.. How about it... Instant coffee sludge is still coffee sludge... Would you use it?

You can always try making your own sludge by taking a little bit of instant coffee and mixing it with a little hot water and then tasting it.

I don't know if you can make instant coffee in a coffee maker. The stirring motion when you mix the coffee granuals in the cup with the hot water is what dissolves the dehydrated coffee granuals. The hot water going through the granuals in the brew basket wouldn't be enough saturation to dissolve the granuals. Of course, you can always try that too and let us know what happens.

What happens is something akin to "coffee tea".....

Watery, Watery Coffee, that has the same consistency of tea, and then of course, after you have used it 3 or 4 times... It gets nasty.. Don't ask.. You really don't want to know how I know that...

It's interesting that so many people are interested in the waste product of pressed coffee. Most people throw it out, but some are innovative to use the sludge as something valuable. It kind of reminds me how pavement is made from the useless, bottom-of-the-barrel oil- people used to give that away for free (minus transportation costs) becuase it's a waste. Now since our fossil fuel is running low, this waste product is now something valuable.

Just like oil, coffee sludge could be the next commodity!

LOL.. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.. First you would need a LOT of sludge for it to become a tradable commodity.. And where would you get that amount of sludge? We would be talking about a barrel at least.. You know how many cups of coffee are needed for a barrel of sludge?

Let's do some quick calculations.. Let's say we get a standard barrel and it's 100 liters. Now let's get a standard cup of coffee, and it would have maybe.... I don't know... 10 mL of sludge max... And that would be a LOT, but we're trying to use easy numbers. So let see... There are 1000 mL in a liter... So we would be talking 100 cups of coffee for 1 liter of sludge. Now, to fill that barrel we would need the sludge from 100 cups of coffee times 100 liters... That works out to be TEN THOUSAND cups of coffee to make a barrel of sludge.. Now, let's say that each coffee costs $0.20 a cup... So the sludge we would offload at say a penny for the sake of argument. That would make the price of a barrel of coffee sludge worth $100, MORE than the current price for a barrel of oil! However, remember that figure.. We had $0.20 per cup of coffee, so we need 10,000 x $0.20 which is $2,000. So for every $2,000 you would get $100 in coffee sludge... Ok.. So what about coffee chains? The manager gets smart and starts collecting the sludge.. Now, realistically, he can hope to sell maybe 500 cups of coffee in a day. So, he would need to stock up the sludge for 20 days before he could make an extra $100... Doesn't sound worth it for the work involved...

I've made like 3 batches of coffee with my new Thermos Nissan french coffee press (got it from Amazon for $21 w/ a $5 off facebook coupon, but they apparently sold out of the $26 coffee presses now). Been using Dunkin Donuts "original blend", since that's been recommended by a lot of people. And I've also got an electric blade grinder that I got at a yard sale for $2.

First batch, I put like 2 table spoons of ground coffee for the 34-ounces. I tried to grind it fairly coarse so that I wouldn't get any sludge. I also pushed very slowly on the plunger to minimize sludge. The coffee was weak as hell, but it was my first time!! Funny thing is that it worked out so that the final [fourth] cup was really just a sip or two that was poured after we left an hour or so to go to a restaurant, and this sip had a little "grind" to it... if ya catch my drift. This sludge was very cocoa-ish and enjoyable, IMO, however.

Second batch, I put like 4 table spoons of ground coffee in the 34-oz press. I tried to give it a more medium grind, as well... because I think that should affect the flavor moreso than just doubling the amount of coffee... plus I wanted more sludge!! I did not however notice the sludge for some reason. I also tried an iced coffee, but didn't enjoy it as much as I was expecting.

Third batch, I put 4 table spoons of ground coffee in the press. This time, I tried to get a more fine ground batch, but there was still an unground bean or three in this batch. Didn't want to keep going and get an extra-fine ground batch... so just tried to stick with a good thing. Stuck with the hot coffee bit and didn't notice any sludge, but I think it's because any grit is all mixed in the coffee. I did notice that I was smiling a good bit after my second mug, however. Soo... I think I'm doing something right. I now understand why they call coffee a drug and why 90% of adults drink it. . . .

I have been drinking my coffee lately brewed by my french press and I get more sludge then any other brewing method. I do not dislike or like about sludge. I just drink it when I have in my cup... It doesn't bother me a bit....

Sometimes I let my sludge sit for 15-20 minutes and make a sludge shot. It has the same effect as a shot of espresso has

Don't know why people dont like coffee sludge, I like the most but only when I go outside on coffee cafe, when I make I prefer plain coffee...
It make me fresh..
