Boiler gasket: Paper or teflon?

I removed the end cap on my recently-purchased vintage Astoria Argenta to clean out the mini Carlsbad Caverns of stalagtites that had formed on the bottom of the boiler. When I pulled it, the original paper gasket broke into pieces. I ordered a replacement, noting that both paper and teflon were available as options. I went with teflon (in case someone has to do the same thing I did in twenty years.) Now I'm wondering why both paper and teflon are available, and if I might end up regretting the choice to go with teflon instead of the original paper gasket. Any advice on why there's a difference ?

I would definitely trust most anything far more than paper, which seems sort of odd.

They call it paper, but it's really more of a cardboard--same kind of thing you find in high temperature-rated car parts. I'll assume that the teflon one will hold up.
