What Makes the Coffee Worth it at the Coffee Shop

Hello folks,

Today I would like to take the time as a coffee love and customer what I think makes me choose a coffee shop. I base it my choices on two things, a regular brewed cup of coffee and a slow pour over. First, if you can make a great tasting regular brewed coffee that doesn't try to mimic Foldgers or Starbucks you win. I don't normally order brewed coffee at shops. Second, can you make a great pour over? I love slow pour overs more than I love espresso because it takes the normal brewed coffee and really focuses on the flavor profile hints the name. If you can perfects those two drinks for me, then you win.

How do you judge a good coffee shop?

Customer service is big for me. I hate the pretentious attitudes in a majority of shops. My favorite is Storyville in Seattle. The were so laid back and knowledgeable. The worst is when you go into a shop and they start talking down to you and correct the way you pronounce drinks. I usually chuckle can keep it to myself that I've been in the business for 30 years....and then its on and I try and pronounce things incorrectly.

You crack me up! My pet peeve is going into a Starbucks and ordering a "Meisto" (sp), which is their name for a cafe au' lait. I order a cafe au lait, and the clerk just has no clue what that is. I don't do it much anymore because I'm over it...lol!

I'll thow my two cents in on this one. First and foremost they must be able to make a good espresso. The milk drinks also need to be done properly in the right proportions true to the ideal for each drink. The people serving me need to be cordial and the atmosphere needs to be clean, neat, comfortable and relaxed. And I learnd something from @Mr.Peaberry. I did not know that Charbucks served my favorite coffee drink, cafe au lait. I always looked for it and since I never looked very hard, never found it. Now I know they call it a Misto. I'm like you though. I refuse to call the drink sizes by their chosen names and instead say small, medium or large. I rarely get corrected. At most the person taking my order for a medium will say grande and I'll respond with medium. Frankly, I consider those names pretentious. Which is why you will rarely catch me going into a Charbucks unless I either have to use the bathroom or there isn't another coffee option available.

HA! When I was roasting for a casino I made up the word Enorme (as in enormous) For a year no one called me on it. One day someone looked at the menu board and said you made that word up. I smiled and said, "yep". One person over 2 years called me on it.
