Roaster RPM reduction

I've seen both belt and chain reductions on roasters but no worm drives or gear set ups.
Is that because manufacturers want to reduce the amount of heat transfer from the drum shaft to the motor?

I'm thinking of doing a 40:1 worm drive reduction from the 1,725RPM 1hp motor to a 1:1 chain and sprocket connected to the drum.
this way I get a rotation speed of about 43RPM at the drum.

Any less expensive options out there?

ouch!:spillingcoffee:
I Guess buying a new 1hp motor with gearbox set exactly to my specs for about $350 is a good deal?

Depending on where and how you mount the drive motor - my Ambex has it inside the roaster, maybe 8" below the gas manifold - you'll want a motor that is rated for the higher temps.

I suppose the main reason roaster mfg'rs don't use a gearbox is why add in that cost when you can get the rpm you want by selecting the motor rpm's and the sprockets correctly.
