Hi All -

I think I finally found a new home for my startup roasting business. Nice little flex space w/ office and warehouse space. My plan was to utilize the warehouse space for roasting and green storage. However, that portion of the building does not have air conditioning. Our summers in the Midwest get pretty hot - should I be concerned about storage of green in that area?

ensoluna - I honestly have no idea how hot it will get... we get temps around 100 degrees in peak summer. Not worried about winter - it does have heat. No open windows ... it will have a drive in garage door so when I'm working I can get it cooled down. My thought was to possible repackage into smaller qty's in grainpro bags to reduce humidity concerns but that's obviously a big extra step.

significant changes in temp & humidity is the worst for green coffee.
the ideal storage is RH (Relative Humidity) more or less 60% and 70 to 77 F. (but none of us lives in this Ideal world...)

and I asked you about "open window because it is important to have air circulation to prevent condensation.

the best way is to order the coffee for the use within few weeks to a month.
if not, small q'ty into grainpro, or even vacuum packing will be great.... but extra cost.
good luck to you.

The grainpro bags will work if you do not keep an overstocked amount of green coffee. That may be difficult to determine upon startup though(sorry).
Since there is no windows or ventilation, a dehumidifier will help, except the temperature will also rise in the storage room without open or cross ventilation.
The grainpro bags will hold a full 154lb. bag, so you would not need to repackage in smaller quantities. You may be able to install a non vented AC in the room,
just a thought for better storage environment control.

BTW, a lot of people says that GREEN BEAN can last at least couple of years, FRESH. or even longer.

but that is not true.

in my case, as green bean exporter, let's say in this 2014/2015 harvest season sales which began from Jan 2015 to April 2015 Guatemala, when I do not ship the green beans before September 1, 2015, it will be considered as "OLD CROP" and I have to sell them at significantly cheaper pricing.

So, just like roasted beans, it is better to use the green beans as soon as possible. I give 6 month fresh. and just okay up to one year.

Thanks all... we are exploring the cost of pulling in AC (portable or perm) as well as power ventilators. Is there any 'standards' published for green storage... I.E. min/max temp & humidity?

hello mike.
yesterday, I posted four new threads about green coffee bean storage information.
in those threads, you will find all the information you are looking for.
if you need anything else, please let me know.
thanks

I have not found grain-pro bags to have any detrimental effect on the coffee, only good impact. But then, it's impossible to say without having received the exact same coffee in both burlap and grain-pro.

Anyone agree with this cliam " Grainpro plastic will affect the test of the coffee" is it better to use only bags?

it might be some other factors are involved when someone claims that their coffees taste bad or color got changed when they open up the grainpro.
probably, the coffee container got moved from hot/humid port to cold port.
or detained or delayed at the origin or destination port where temp & humidity are very high.

It makes sence, it could be one of the above reason
