Well I've been playing around with how I make my coffee for awhile, the last change being an upgrade to my grinder that I admit I was skeptical about. Upgraded from a flat burr to a Baratza Encore conical burr and even I noticed a big improvement in the coffee I made with the new grinder this morning.
The other changes I have made are to only put enough coffee in the grinder for the current grind, purchased a glass electric pot to heat my water. The electric pot heats the water faster than I was heating it on the stove and it may just be me, but I think the glass is better than the stainless steel pot I had been using. I admit that it was not a quality stainless but I'll still go with the glass.
I can most definitely see better consistency in the grind with the new grinder. With the better consistency there is now little to no bitterness in the coffee, this is the part I was having a hard time buying into, but I see a significant difference in the coffee.
Thanks to everyone for your suggestions.
