Not a cigar smoker, but had a cigar shop owner approach me about creating a unique roast to pair with cigars. Any advice on what flavors one would look for to pair this a cigar? Any cigar smokers out there?

why don't you try "old crop" coffee beans? or 5 month old roasted beans with some defective beans (such as quakers) on it?
they will smell and taste like "bad cigar & dirty ashtray".

however, there is TOBACCO as one of the coffee terms, describing coffee flavors.
It states : the aroma and flavor of fresh tobacco in brewed coffee. A tobacco-like taste is not necessarily disagreeable and is found in various specialty coffees throughtout the world. A tobaccoy taste or aroma should not be confused with characteristics of burnt tobacco (ash).

Haha - I like the idea of using the floor sweepings and chaff to mix with walmart coffee. Sounds like a pretty profitable product! But seriously - do cigars have certain flavor notes that could be paired with a coffee or wine? - is that ridiculous?

how about drinking a great pour over while smoking a Cohiba?
Many people drink wine while smoking, right?
about the flavor notes of cigars, unfortunately and fortunately, I would not know. I never smoked before....

As a former cigar smoker, and a lifelong coffee spaz, I just don't see a pairing of the two. The cigar will not allow the full enjoyment of a finer cup of coffee, and there are things better suited to enhancing the cigar than coffee. In my opinion, it's like trying to pair a great cheese with a cigar...neither benefit the other. Just sayin'....

I enjoyed a Don Pepin Garcia Blue Generoso with a cup of Sumatra brewed with my Clever Dripper this afternoon. To say one cannot or even may not compliment the other is just plain wrong. I suggest that a more thorough knowledge of both coffee and cigars would be advisable if one is to try pairing one with the other.... :)

I have to agree w/ Bacchus; a good coffee will bring out certain flavors in a cigar - it can enhance the cigar, but the cigar won't do much for the coffee.

As for what kind of coffee, my suggestion would be a good Indonesian, Central or South American coffee, and not so much the fruity DP Ethiopians. Alex is right, that there are some coffees that have a tobacco note to them, but since the cigar already has that flavor, I'd steer away from the coffee having it too. Sweet, chocolatey, nutty coffees would be more appropriate.

It would depend on the cigar your trying to pair. They are like coffee and have many different flavors, sounds like a great opportunity to have a cigar / coffee pairing event :)

I think, too, that it would depend on the individual doing the pairing. Like a lot of things, flavor is very subjective. What I taste in a cigar or coffee may be quite different from what you taste.
