Hello! My IR12 is side vented. I am located in a two story brick building. The IR12 requires an 8" pipe and the city required it to be double walled. The exhaust makes a 90 degree turn up about 8-9' and then turns thru the outside wall. Once outside it runs diagonally for 5-6' till it tee's into a 12" single walled exhaust that then runs another 15' to the roof. The exhaust then parallels the roof for about 20' till it meets the roof fan and then turns upward another 10'. Where it tee's into the outside exhaust there are 12" and a 6" port for additional outside air to be introduced in the mixture. This system has worked well and when installed it meet Diedrich's specs. I would recommend double wall exhaust indoors and thru the building for safety. Outside it is a matter of budget and building material. Remember that all 90 degrees turns require more cleaning effort, so try to keep them to a minimum. Hope this helps.
